WHS hosted conference rival Forest Lake on 1/19. Woodbury earned an overtime victory from Howard Jones and accepted 3 forfeits in a lopsided loss to the ranked Rangers.
Saturday 1/21 brought the Henry Sibley Tournament. The Royals placed 5th of the 8 teams, with 11 individual placewinners:
1st: Howard Jones, Ben Donnelly
2nd: Connor Herreld, Justin Herold Plakut
3rd: David Beseman, Matt Delaney, Ty Johnson
5th: Chandler Ignaszewski, Matt Lundblad
6th: Kevin Beseman, Blake Von Arx
In addition, Howard Jones was named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.
Anthony Doreo and Tucker Benjamin also competed for the team at Sibley.
Woodbury looks to improve on its 2-5 dual meet record with a home tri against section rivals Stillwater and North St. Paul on 1/26, and at the Bloomington Kennedy Invitational duals tournament on 1/28.
1/7/2012: Roseville and Minneapolis South duals; Cannon Falls Invitational
To kick off 2012, WHS hosted a triangular with section foes Roseville and Minneapolis South. The Royals fought hard, but were shorthanded without captain Connor Herreld and starter Justin Herold-Plakut due to illness. WHS couldn't overcome these lineup alterations and dropped both duals, losing to the Raiders 48-23 and to the Tigers in a close match, 35-34. Congrats to Tucker Benjamin who scored his first varsity win with a pin vs. South.
Woodbury's dual meet record stands at 2-4 for the season, with the next team action scheduled as a home dual against Forest Lake on January 19th.
The Royals then headed south to the Cannon Falls Invitational Tournament on January 7th. Varsity finished in 9th place out of 14 teams in this tournament which included 4 squads boasting state rankings.

5th: Howard Jones
Also winning matches but not earning a place for Woodbury were Matt Delaney and Matt Lundblad.

12/30/2011: Rumble on the Red
The Royals traveled to Fargo over holiday break to compete in the Rumble on the Red, a Flo Nationals event tournament. 60 teams from 6 states competed in the 2-day tourney, comprising over 1,500 wrestlers in Varsity and JV brackets.
In the Varsity competition, Woodbury fielded 7 wrestlers and finished in 31st place. Individual results:

2011 ROR JV Results
12/10/2011: East Ridge and Park duals; Maple Grove Tournament
On 12/8, WHS gained a split in the District 833 triangular at Park. The Royals handled the Raptors 63-18, but dropped a close one to Park 38-33. Park earned back the traveling trophy by defeating East Ridge.
Woodbury's dual meet record stands at 2-2 for the season, with the next team action scheduled as a home triangular with Minneapolis South and Roseville.
The Royals then traveled west to compete in the Maple Grove Tournament on December 10th. The team finished 5th out of 12 teams. 7 of the 9 Varsity competitors earned places, including:

Congratulations also to Sophomore Justin Herold-Plakut on his 100th varsity win, which he earned at the Maple Grove tourney. Justin also was named WHS Athlete of the Week.

12/3/2011: Cretin and Hastings duals; Lakeville North Invite
On 12/2, WHS split a road triangular with 2 Suburban East Conference opponents, beating Cretin Derham Hall before dropping the contest with Hastings. In the other match of the evening, Hastings bested Cretin.
The Royals also competed in the Lakeville North Paul Wolf Panther Invite on December 3rd. WHS finished 8th out of 16 teams in this individual format tourney, despite filling out only 8 of the 14 weight classes. Varsity placewinners were:

12/1/2011: First competition of the 2011-12 season
This week we have more practice as well as our first competitve action of the season. Practices Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday after school lead up to an SEC tri vs. Hastings and Cretin-Derham Hall. Host Hastings and Cretin go at 4:00 PM, followed by the Royals vs. Cretin at 5:30 PM, and concluding with Woodbury and Hasting at 7:00 PM. The next day the squad again travels to the Paul Wolf Lakeville North Invitational -- wrestling begins at 9:30 AM for both the Varsity and JV at this individual format event.

3/5/2011: State Tournament
The Royals' 2 State Tournament entrants were able to improve upon their "one and done" finishes from the 2010 state tourney...
Justin Herold-Plakut went 2-2 and finished just one victory short of the medal round and a placing in the tough 112AAA bracket.
Ben Donnelly finished 4-2 and placed 5th at 130AAA, a division most notable for an epic semifinal rematch between nationally ranked wrestlers Mark Hall and Ben Morgan.

2/26/2011: Section 4AAA Individuals
WHS grapplers competed for individual honors as well as a possible trip to the State Tournament Saturday at Stillwater. 12 guys took the mat with 7 placing:

4th; Brandon Borchardt
5th: Quinn Schmalz, Matt Delaney, Howard Jones
Connor Harreld was in position to place as well but suffered an injury during wrestlebacks and was forced to default out of the tournament as a result.

2011 Section 4AAA Individual Brackets

2/19/2011: Section 4AAA Team
The Royals beat Roseville 42-28 in the Section 4AAA quarterfinals, avenging an earlier season loss. Stillwater then knocked Woodbury out of team competition in the semis. Best of luck to White Bear Lake who will return to the "X" as the 4AAA team champs.
The last event before State is the Section 4AAA Individual Tournament, to be held 2/25 at White Bear Lake Area High School and 2/26 at Stillwater Area High School. Day one will feature pigtail brackets, quarterfinals, and the first round of wrestlebacks. Day two will complete the wrestling to determine the 2 from each weight class that go to the individual competition at State. The brackets when posted. can be found here:

2/10/2011: Cretin Derham Hall dual
The Royals ended their regular season with a dominant victory over Cretin Derham Hall by the score of 68-11. The victory moved WHS to a 10-14 record in duals this season, including a 4-4 mark in their home gym.
Next up is the Section 4AAA Team Tournament, to be held 2/19 at Roseville Area High School. The #6 seeded Royals face the host, #3 seed Roseville, in the quarterfinals. The brackets can be found here:

2/5/2011: White Bear Lake dual; Robbinsdale Armstrong Invitational
WHS faced off with conference and Section 4AAA foe White Bear Lake on 2/3. White Bear Lake notched the victory over the Royals, true to their #9 ranking in Class AAA. Justin Herald-Plakut, Matt Lundblad, Ben Donnelly, and Ryan Dickhausen scored victories for the Royals.
Woodbury next competed in the Robbinsdale Armstrong Invitational, another duals tournament held on Saturday, February 5th. The tournament was pre-bracketed so no placings were awarded. WHS finished with a 2-1 record, topping Orono and dropping a decision to Faribault before beating host Armstrong in the 3rd round.
A JV tournament was again conducted in conjunction with the duals. Chris Cohen, Kevin Herreld, Niko Yanez, Damon Snidarich, and Kevin Beseman all participated for the Royals.
1/29/2011: Hastings dual; Bloomington Kennedy Invitational
On 1/27, WHS ventured south to Hastings and discovered first-hand why the Raiders were recently rated the #49 team in the country. Ty Johnson and Justin Herald-Plakut notched the only victories for the Royals.
Woodbury then competed in the Bloomington Kennedy Invitational, a duals tournament held on Saturday, January 29th. The 6th-seeded Royals ended up 6th, losing to Irondale, besting St. Paul Highland Park, and then falling to Champlin Park in the 5th place match. Coach Smith sat some starters and was able to get matches for some of the other guys who have been working hard in the room.
In addition to the duals, a JV tournament was conducted. Chris Cohen, Niko Yanez, and Phllip Fraser all competed for Woodbury.
1/22/2011: Centennial and Mounds View duals; Hutchinson Invite
On 1/20, WHS split a home triangular with 2 Section 5AAA competition, beating SEC opponent Mounds View before dropping the contest with Centennial. In the other match of the evening, Centennial topped Mounds View.
The Royals then traveled west to the ultra-tough Hutchinson Invitational 6 of the 8 teams were ranked in the top-12 or "Lean and Mean" by The Guillotine. WHS finished 7th with 2 open weight classes. Placewinners included:

1/13/2011: Minneapolis South and Roseville duals; Cannon Falls Invite
WHS began 2011 losing two tough duals to section foes, Minneapolis South and Roseville. The Royals will be looking to reverse these results at the 4AAA Team Sectionals in February.
The Royals also finished a respectable sixth out of 13 teams at the Cannon Falls Invitational, despite having 3 open weight classes. Varsity placewinners:

Woodbury ended 2010 with an individual tourney and a team event.
- On December 22, the team finished 5th out of 7 at the Maple Grove Invitational individual tournament. Placewinners for the team included:

12/20/2010: December competition
The Royals kicked off their 2010-11 season in grand fashion, winning the District #833 championship by sweeping duals with rivals Park and East Ridge on December 2nd.

Woodbury's record in dual meets stands at 2-4 after losses to St. Francis, Stillwater, Forest Lake, and Tartan. The next duals competition will be over the holiday break at the Eau Claire tournament where the squad will face-off against 5 different opponents.

11/29/2010: Welcome to the 2010-2011 Season
Per MSHSL rules, Monday November 22nd was the first day of practice for the 2010-11 Varsity and Junior Varsity season. Weight Certifications are Monday 11/29. The first competitve action of the season is the District #833 showdown against East Ridge and Park at ERHS on Thursday. Woodbury gets matches 2 and 3 of the triangular, beginning against Park at 6:30 PM. JV and Varsity will run at the same time on 2 different mats. Then, after practice on Friday, the squad travels to the Lakeville North Invitational on Saturday -- wrestling begins at 9:30 AM for both the Varsity and JV.

3/6: State Tournament: CJ Hays takes 4th
The 5 Royals State competitors took to the mat at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul March 3rd-6th.
CJ Hays finished his High School career with a stellar 43-2 record on his way to a 4th place finish at 189AAA. A highlight for the Woodbury fans during his 4-2 showing at state: A convincing 13-4 victory over #2 rated Matt Hechsel of Apple Valley.
Dan Tyler capped off a very successful 24-17 Senior season with a tough draw, falling first to then undefeated Timmy Ruter of Buffalo, and then dropping his first match in the wrestlebacks.
Brandon Borchardt, Justin Herold-Plakut, and Ben Donnelly each lost their opening matches, and were eliminated from the tournament when their respective first round opponents fell in the second round.
2/27: Section 4AAA Individual Competition: Royals send 5 to State

2/20: Section 4AAA Team Competition
The Royals beat Minneapolis South 43-27 in the quarterfinals of the Section 4AAA Team action on Saturday, February 20th. In the semifinals, Stillwater bested Woodbury 62-11. Good luck to White Bear Lake, Section 4AAA team champs, at the State Team Tournament. Next for the Royals is the Section 4AAA Individual Tournament where the top 2 at each weight class earn a trip to Xcel Center for the State Individual Tourney. The Section 4AAA Individuals will be hosted at Stillwater High School on Saturday, February 27th -- the action starts at 10:00 AM.
2/13: Suburban East Conference Tournament
Woodbury High School finished 8th at the SEC tournament, held Saturday 2/13 at Forest Lake. Placewinners:

3rd: Justin Herold-Plakut, Dan Tyler
4th: Ben Donnelly
5th: Matt Lundblad, Brandon Borchardt
Hays and Herold-Plakut were named All-SEC, while Tyler, Donnelly, Borchardt, and Lundblad earned Honorable Mention All-SEC honors.
In JV competition, Ty Johnson took 4th, Nate Dvorak and Kevin Anderson earned 5th, while Tim McLoed garnered 6th place honors.
Prior to the SEC tourney, the Royals bested Cretin Derham Hall in their final scheduled dual of the regular season. Next up for Woodbury: the Section 4AAA team competition at Roseville Area High School on Saturday, 2/20, where they begin against Minneapolis South in the quarterfinal round. This will be a rematch for the two schools -- back on January 7th, the Royals traveled to South and took a 40-28 decision.
2/9: The final week of the regular season
The Royals recent results include a 1-1 record in the Royals Triangular, beating Tartan and falling to Hastings, and a home loss to White Bear Lake. Woodbury also went 1-2 at the Bloomington Kennedy and 1-2 the Robbinsdale Armstrong dual tournaments. This week sees the squad travel to Cretin Derham Hall on Thursday for a dual meet, followed by a trip to Forest Lake for the Suburban East Conference Tournament on Saturday.
1/22: Recent Dual Results: Roseville, North St. Paul, Mounds View
The Royals enter a two-week stretch of the season with no weekend events except practices. During this time, Woodbury went 1-2, besting North St. Paul and dropping contests with Roseville and Mounds View. Next up: WHS hosts a tough Triangular with Hastings and Tartan on Thursday, January 28. Times are TBD and will be posted when available. The next weekend tournament is Saturday, January 30 at Bloomington.
1/9: Royals 4th at Cannon Falls
Woodbury wrestled hard to finish 4th out of 12 teams at the Cannon Falls Invitational. Placewinners:

Full bracket results are available on The Guillotine Results page. Prior to Cannon, the Royals bested Minneapolis South in a dual on 1/7. The Royals' other dual that evening against Minneapolis Southwest was concluded after the 152-pound match due to injury, with no team winner being declared. This week the Royals travel to Roseville on Friday, 1/15 for duals against Roseville and North St. Paul.
12/30: Royals 3rd at Eau Claire
Woodbury went 3-2 in duals to finish 3rd out of 11 teams at the Eau Claire Invitational. This performance squares the teams' dual record at 5-5 for the season. Coach Smith was able to get 24 wrestlers mat time at this event, including captain Grant Boyd for the first action of his Senior year. Next week the Royals travel to Minneapolis South on Thursday for a triangular with South and Minneapolis Southwest, then to the 12-team Cannon Falls Invitational on Saturday 1/9.
12/22: Forest Lake and Mahtomedi Duals
The Royals split a pair of duals leading up to the Holiday season. The team lost 55-18 at Forest Lake on 12/17, and then handed non-conference foe Mahtomedi a 54-19 loss at the Zephyrs' gym on 12/22. The unofficial JV tally mirrored the Varsity results for both contests. Victorious in both Varsity duals for the Royals were Justin Herold-Plakut, Brandon Borchardt, Connor Harreld, and CJ Hays. The Royals also welcomed back captain Austin Hassenauer from the injury list at Forest Lake. After 4-day break for Christmas, it's back to practice as the Royals prepare for the Eau Claire tournament on December 30th.
12/12: Maple Grove Invitational
The Royals competed at the Maple Grove Invitational Saturday. The Varsity placed 9th out of 14 teams. JV scores were not tallied, but unofficially the Royals had a strong showing. Individual place winners for the Royals included first place finishes for Ty Johnson and Sam Lee in the JV competition and individual weight class championships for Justin Herold-Plakut, Ben Donnelly, and CJ Hays in the Varsity division. Also winning matches in the Varsity division were Matt Lundblad, Logan Kugler, Dylan Ross, and Steve Nasseff.

12/7: This week's competition
The third week of the season finds Varsity and JV at St. Paul Central on Wednesday for a Quadrangular with Minneapolis Washburn and Cretin-Derham Hall. (WHS and CDH will not wrestle since the two teams are scheduled to face off in conference action later in the season.) Thursday brings our first home match of the year as the Stillwater Ponies visit the WHS gym. JV starts at 5:30 PM and the Varsity goes at 7:30 PM. The squad wraps up the week at the Maple Grove Invitational -- action for both Varsity and JV begins at 9:30 AM.
12/5: WHS at the Panther Invitational
WHS Varsity and JV competed at the Lakeville North Panther Invitational Saturday. JV scores are not available at this time. Varsity finished in 10th in the team competition. Individual placewinners included champions Justin Herold-Plakut and CJ Hays, along with 5th place winner Ben Donnelly and 6th place winner Brandon Borchardt.

12/3: WHS finishes 1-1 in the #833 Triangular
The WHS Varsity began the season tonight by going 1-1 at the #833 Triangular. After a close 38-34 loss to Park, the Royals bested host East Ridge 69-10. Park went 2-0 while ERHS ended up 0-2. The Royals' JV action matched the varsity by falling to the Wolfpack before beating The Raptors. Following a practice and picture day on Friday, it's off to the Lakeville North Invitational for both WHS squads on Saturday.
11/30: Time for the competition to begin!
This week we have more practice as well as our first competitve action of the season. Practices Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday after school (as well as a Tuesday AM session) lead up to the District #833 showdown against East Ridge and Park at ERHS on Thursday. Woodbury gets matches 2 and 3 of the triangular, beginning against Park at 6:30 PM. JV and Varsity will run at the same time, on 2 different mats. Then, after practice on Friday, the squad travels to the Lakeville North Invitational on Saturday -- wrestling begins at 9:30 AM for both the Varsity and JV.
11/23: The Season Starts!
Per MSHSL rules, Monday November 23rd is the first day of practice for the 2009-10 Varsity and Junior Varsity season. The week kicks off with 3:20 PM practice on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Weight Certifications will also be on Wednesday. Then, after an off day to spend time with family and friends for Thanksgiving, we're back at it 3:00 PM Friday. Saturday currently has an 8:00 AM practice and a 3:00 PM practice or scrimmage...stay tuned for updates on that Saturday afternoon activity.
